Description
La Divina Commedia. Purgatorio, Canto III is an original color woodcut by Salvador Dalí, created as part of his celebrated illustration cycle for The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (1265–1321).
For this ambitious project, Dalí created 101 original watercolor drawings interpreting Dante’s journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. These drawings were later translated into woodcuts by master craftsmen using an exceptionally complex process. In total, more than 3,500 hand-carved woodblocks were produced to complete the full series between 1951 and 1964.
Through this cycle, Dalí blends mystical symbolism with sensual and unsettling imagery, offering a deeply personal and imaginative vision of Dante’s epic poem. This particular work belongs to the first limited edition, published by Joseph Fauré in collaboration with Les Heures Claires.
The woodcut bears a signature in the plate and is also hand-signed in pencil by the artist. An additional signature appears on the verso.
