Matthew Radford

Matthew Radford is a British painter, printmaker, photo-etcher, and educator, born in London in 1953. He has worked extensively in both London and New York, developing a distinctive artistic language focused on urban crowds, movement, and the dynamics of contemporary city life.

Radford studied at St Albans School of Art (1971–1972) and later at Camberwell School of Art (1972–1975), where he graduated with first-class honours. His academic background strongly informs his rigorous approach to drawing, composition, and printmaking.

Alongside his artistic practice, Matthew Radford has had a significant teaching career. He taught at Camberwell School of Art (1979–1983), The Drawing Center, New York (1985–1986), and later at the New York Studio School (1989–1993), contributing to the education of a new generation of artists.

His work has been widely exhibited in major group exhibitions, including Royal Festival Hall and RA Diploma Galleries in London (both in 1980), New York Art Now at Helander Gallery, Palm Beach (1989), and the Mostyn Open Exhibition, Llandudno (1993).

Matthew Radford has also held numerous solo exhibitions, notably at Letchworth Museum and Art Gallery (1980) and Kettle’s Yard Gallery, Cambridge (1984). Following extensive exhibitions in New York, his work was presented in a series of shows at Houldsworth Fine Art, as well as a solo exhibition at Alan Cristea Gallery (2003). Since 1980, his works on paper and prints have been regularly exhibited at Advanced Graphics London, including a significant presentation in 2005.

Radford’s artworks are held in several important public and institutional collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Public Library, as well as numerous corporate and private collections worldwide.
